Practical Tips to Ensure Color Consistency

Ensuring color consistency on the walls and ceilings of your home can seem like an impossible task, but with preparation and the right tools, the end result can be a beautiful paint job. For the task of painting a much larger area or room, there are a few tips that you will need to follow.

Get More than You Need

The first step is to pick out the type of paint that will be used. Making sure you have enough of the paint is very important. When estimating the amount of paint to buy, always estimate a little over what you think you will need. The paint is mixed by computerization, but even with this method, going back to the store for more paint if you run out could alter the color you are purchasing. This is why it is important to overestimate the amount needed for the job.

The Right Tool Makes the Job Easier

The right tools can help make this job much easier. Adding the following items to your list of tools will make this painting project go more smoothly. One thing most people do not think about is purchasing a 5 gallon bucket to mix all of the paint in. By pouring all of your paint in this bucket, it will mix together and become a consistent color.  At the end of the task, if there is any paint left over, you can use it for touch-ups and pour the extra paint back into its original can.

Technique is Everything

A roller and a roller tray will save a lot of time when painting a large area. Painting around the edges with a paintbrush first and then going over the area with a roller will make the paint have the same texture. When doing this, keep in mind that the paint needs to remain wet so the paint that is applied with a roller will blend smoothly into the paint that was applied with the brush. Rollers save a lot of time when painting a bigger surface area. A good tip when using rollers is to wash the roller before using it. This will ensure there are no fibers that will flake off and get into your paint. When using the roller, you will want to make sure you roll over the edge of the previous area before it dries, just like you did with the edges using the brush and roller. If the area dries, then it will show lines or marks that are not consistent. Keep your roller wet, especially the side that is rolling over the edge of a previous surface.

When painting ceilings, it is difficult to use continuous strokes. In this case you will want to use the roller to feather out your paint. Feathering paint means only applying a thin layer of paint that is easy to go over with additional paint. When applying the second coat of paint, it is important to go in the opposite direction of your first stroke. This will help eliminate the paint lines. The thin layer of paint will not make lines or marks on the ceiling and it will give the illusion of a consistent texture and color. There is also a product that can be added to the paint that will extend the paint’s drying time. This product is called a paint conditioner or paint extender. It is helpful in avoiding the lines in between strokes and keeping your paint color looking consistent.

Another good tip to keep in mind when painting a wall is to have your paint strokes going down towards the floor. While painting, it is also a good idea to apply the same amount of pressure to each of your strokes. This will ensure a uniform look on the whole surface of the wall. If you apply more pressure to one stroke and lighten up on the next, it will be very noticeable. In addition to uniform strokes, it is a good idea to add an additional layer of paint. By adding the second coat of paint, it will enrich the color and add depth to the surface that you are painting. When applying additional coats of paint, it is important to note that every wall should have the same number of layers. The paint will not look consistent if one wall has one coat of paint and the wall across from it has two coats of paint. Something else to keep in mind is to completely finish one wall before moving onto the next wall. This is important because you want all of the paint to dry evenly and look uniform.

These are just a few simple tips and tools that can be used when painting. They will help make your painting job easier and also allow you to have gorgeous, consistent color. You will be a pro painter in no time.
